Man accused of lying to FBI and embracing unverified dossier opened investigation of Trump

NY Times:

F.B.I. Opened Inquiry Into Whether Trump Was Secretly Working on Behalf of Russia

The investigation, whose fate is unclear, led counterintelligence investigators to consider an explosive question: whether the president’s actions constituted a possible threat to national security.
This is poor reporting.  This investigation was opened by Andrew McCabe who was also using the bogus dossier to get a FISA warrant to spy in the Trump campaign.  He was deeply conflicted because of his ties to the Clintons and his clear animosity toward the President. McCabe was fired and a criminal referral was made against him by the Inspector General.

Paul Sperry nails it:
Here's the lede the NYT should have written: An ex-acting FBI director tied to Clinton machine now under grand jury investigation for lying to federal agents opened both a criminal & counterintelligence investigation of a sitting president based on a Democrat dossier & NBC News
