NY Times: Newt Gingrich Echoes Donald Trump With Remarks on Muslims and Terrorism The former House speaker said that American intelligence agencies need to more closely scrutinize mosques, and that any Muslim who believes in Sharia law should be required to leave the country. Trump does not speak with the same clarity that Gingrich does.  He tends to make broad statements and then starts whittling back.  Gingrich is on to something when dealing with Sharia.  It is part of a doctrine of Islamic supremacy that is totally inconsistent with the US Constitution's 1st amendment which provides for freedom of religion. NY Times: The Risks of Becoming a Trump Running Mate Vice-presidential nominees usually rise in stature. But fear that a Trump ticket could lose badly may deter potential partners. If I had to pick someone at this point it would probably be Newt Gingrich.  He has been more open to Trump than most people with Washington experience and someone like Chris Cristi would only add another northeastern Republican in a state they would still be unable to carry.   Sarah Palin seems to have lost her luster even with conservatives.  It is doubtful that Trump to get anyone who has participated in the race to join him after his barrage of insults against opponents. Gingrich would also fit because he is not someone who would be worried about his future in politics which is mostly behind him at this point.

In a recent Quinnipiac poll , the word most mentioned by respondents in association with Hillary Clinton was “liar.” The runners-up were “dishonest” and “untrustworthy” — offered by a combined 394 people. The next most common term, “experience,” was offered by 82. Now Hillary’s solution to nearly her lowest favorability ratings in two decades of public life is to lie some more. ... The truth is apparently not her friend so she says whatever she thinks will get her Democrat votes.  She is blessed with challengers on the Democrat side who will not even challenger on her false statements.

NY Times: Gingrich Accuses Fox News of Bias Newt Gingrich became the latest Republican candidate to lash out at the cable news network, accusing it on Wednesday of dooming his flagging campaign by slanting its political coverage to Mitt Romney's benefit. I don't believe Fox had a pro Romney bias.  They were as tough on Romney as they were any of the candidates and they gave both Gingrich and Santorum nightly interview time to get their message out.  They were both on significantly more often than Romney.  I got where I changed the channel when they came on, because I already had heard their pitch on previous nights.

Washington Post: Rick Santorum has won the Republican primary in Alabama, based on exit polls and vote tallies, bolstering the former Pennsylvania senator’s case that he is the favorite of conservatives in all corners of the country, and should be the sole challenger to front-runner Mitt Romney. Polls have also closed in neighboring Mississippi, home to the day’s other Southern primary. But the outcome in that state remains too close to call. ...  The Mississippi polls are even tighter than they were in Alabama which also suggest a three way split of delegates.  Santorum may have some bragging rights but he is still not gaining on Romney.  It appears that he and Gingrich are going to stay in to deny Romney a majority if they can.  I am not sure that is going to help Republicans defeat Obama, but they have become passionate in their animosity toward Romney.

Texas Tribune: Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania has a commanding lead among Republican presidential candidates in Texas, according to a new University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll. Santorum would get the votes of 45 percent of the respondents if the election were held today, according to the survey. The other three candidates in the GOP race — former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and U.S. Rep.  Ron Paul  of Texas — are clustered well behind. Gingrich got 18 percent, Romney received 16 percent and Paul garnered 14 percent. The presidential race in Texas remains highly volatile, and the numbers could change significantly between now and the state's primaries. They were originally scheduled for March 6 — early voting would have started this week — but have been delayed by redistricting litigation. Dick Armey (R-Texas) blasted Newt Gingrich for his continued tough attacks on Mitt Romney saying Gingrich was carrying out a vendetta against the Republican frontrunner. Rather than deliver a speech, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives instead opted to hold a press conference to unveil a supposed new campaign strategy.   The weakness of his position during the rambling 22-minute event was underlined by the fact that he had to begin by denying he was planning to drop out. 'I'm not going to withdraw,' he said. 'I'm actually pretty happy with where we are.'   It has been reported that he would announce he was 'going positive' for the rest of the campaign.
