 The Lid: It’s bad enough that the Biden administration has responded so weakly to Saudi Arabia’s massacres of African migrants. But now it turns out that U.S. officials have been covering up what they knew and when they knew it. Last week, the  New York Times  reported that since last October, the administration has been aware that Saudi Arabian border guards have slaughtered “hundreds, perhaps thousands” of unarmed African civilians. U.S. officials responded that they found out about it only in December. But now, in response to public pressure, the State Department has admitted that it knew about the killings months earlier—in the summer of 2022. The administration also acknowledges that the U.S. has been training Saudi border security forces. However, it claims the training was provided only to maritime guards, not the border guards carrying out the killings.  Reuters: Africa endures more severe warming than elsewhere, posing risk of conflict Africa is the least industrialized continent on the planet so something else must be causing the heat.  I suspect it is part of a natural warming cycle that the earth experiences from time to time and is not man-made. 

  NY Times: Russia Seeks Buyers for Stolen Ukraine Grain, U.S. Warns American diplomats have alerted 14 countries, most in Africa, that Russian ships filled with plundered Ukrainian grain could be headed their way. The situation poses a dilemma to countries facing dire food shortages, as one-tenth of global wheat exports come from Ukraine . Will the US get the Navy to seize the ships?  I doubt it. 

 Epoch Times: After being rescued and reintroduced to the wild over a decade ago, a once-orphaned elephant has returned to pay a visit to her keeper. Best of all, she brought her own baby to meet him. The elephant, named Sunyei, showed up to visit Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s head elephant keeper, Benjamin, at their Ithumba site in Kenya. On Sept. 1, the Trust shared moving footage of the elephant and her keeper’s reintroduction on Facebook. In the short clip, the now-fully-grown Sunyei nuzzles and snacks from her rescuer’s hands as Benjamin sits patiently beside his old friend. Sunyei’s baby stays close to its mother’s side as the pair catch up. “Fifty years ago, it was considered impossible to raise an orphaned elephant from milk-dependency, let alone reintroduce them into the wild,” the Trust captioned. “Sunyei is testament that this is possible under the right circumstances, and, once wild, these orphans can thrive and even start their own families!” Sunyei was discovered alone...

Andrea Widburg: Whenever Democrats push race to the forefront of the news, reparations pop up.  The theory is that, because their forebears were kidnapped from Africa and enslaved in America, blacks will never catch up economically to whites.  It doesn't matter that there are no slaves or slave-owners today; that most whites are not descended from slave-owners; or that racism impoverished, rather than enriched the South. Scott Adams's brilliant insight cuts through all this: the comparison isn't between black wealth and white wealth in America.  Instead, the comparison must be the difference between blacks' average net worth in America and blacks' average net worth in Africa.  After all, the act of stealing blacks from Africa is the "but for cause" of all wrongs done to blacks. Washington Post: Al-Qaeda and Islamic State groups appear to be coordinating attacks in West Africa At war with each other in the Middle East, groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State are working together to take control of territory across a vast stretch of West Africa, U.S. and local officials say, sparking fears the regional threat could grow into a global crisis. This is happening at a time when the groups are making genocidal attacks on Christians in Africa.  What seems clear is that radical Islam is a danger to all it targets and the local forces seem unable to defend the people.

NY Times: Hiding in the Grass: Fear and Confusion as Fighters Overran a U.S. Airfield The brazen Shabab assault at Manda Bay, Kenya, a sleepy seaside base near the Somali border, on Jan. 5 left three Americans dead, raising complex questions about the military’s mission in Africa. Something as large as an airfield usually requires a number of troops to guard its perimeter.  That is not a job for a small special forces unit.  You need infantry troops to be able to patrol the perimeter and mass against assaults on the facility.  I get the impression there was an inadequate number of troops at the facility.

Telegraph: The Prime Minister will use his Christmas message to express sympathy for Christians "who are facing persecution" around the world. Boris Johnson will also vow to “defend” their right to religious expression, saying he will aim to “change” the dire predicament of those punished for their faith. He will say: “Today of all days, I want us to remember those Christians around the world who are facing persecution. “For them, Christmas Day will be marked in private, in secret, perhaps even in a prison cell. “As Prime Minister, that’s something I want to change. We stand with Christians everywhere, in solidarity, and will defend your right to practise your faith.” ... Betsy McCaughey: Word is spreading worldwide, even to sub-Saharan Africa, that the US has an open southern border and an open checkbook. This summer, thousands of Africans from Cameroon, Congo and other violence-plagued countries are forming caravans, preparing to cross our southern border, according to Customs and Border Protection reports. Border agents from the Del Rio area of Texas sounded the alarm on May 31 about a group of 116 African migrants. The agents provided photos of women with babies strapped to their backs and young men in T-shirts and gym shorts sitting on the US side of the Rio Grande, waiting to be arrested. Then, in early June, agents in Eagle Pass, Texas, detained another group of Central African families. Agents said they were startled to see so many “immigrants from countries not normally encountered.” In all, more than 500 Africans in a single week crossed the Del Rio border zone. Breitbart: The recent death toll of Christians in Nigeria has reached 120 with this week’s slaughter of more than 50 by Fulani Muslim militants in the Kaduna state of Nigeria, the Christian Post reported. The Fulani jihadists, who have become a greater threat to Nigerian Christians than the Islamist terror group Boko Haram, stormed the villages of Inkirimi, Dogonnoma, and Ungwan Gora in the Kajuru Local Government Area last Monday, destroying 143 homes, killing 52 people, and wounding dozens more. The assailants reportedly split into three groups, the first of which fired upon the people, the second set fire to buildings, and the third chased down people fleeing from the scene. Victims of the assault included women and children. Monday’s incident followed an attack the day before in the Ungwan Barde village in Kajuru, where 17 Christians were killed and dozens of homes were burned. Washington Post: Famines, refugees and a skeptical Trump: The new U.N. leader on what may be the world’s hardest job In a wide-ranging interview with The Post, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the U.N. dilemmas at one of the most challenging moments in its history, in which it faces a huge gap between humanitarian needs and U.N. funds — and a Trump administration that may slash aid. The mistake the US and the UN made in the Somali intervention that led to the Blackhawk Down situation was to assume the famine was a byproduct of the war between the factions.  In fact, it was a deliberate attempt to win that war and by intervening led to the attacks on the "humanitarian operations."  The US and the UN should be wary of repeating that mistake.

BBC: Why are there still famines? The United Nations has declared a famine in parts of South Sudan, the first to be announced anywhere in the world in six years. There have also been warnings of famine in north-east Nigeria, Somalia and Yemen. The UN has a tendency to see famines as a byproduct of war, but the reality is that in many African countries it is a deliberate strategy to starve out adversaries.  This is what happened in Somalia when the US blundered into the Blackhawk Down fiasco while trying to feed one of the sides that the warlords were fighting against   It is a relatively easy strategy to execute in a country where the food production is fragile.  Sudan has also had similar "strategic famines."

Express: BATTLE FOR EUROPE: More than 1,100 migrants fight riot police as they storm Spanish border RIOT police fought running battles with a mob of more than a thousand migrants who tried to storm Europe's borders and force their way into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta today. The African culture appears to be in collapse along with that of the Arabs in the Middle East.  If they want to be ruled by Europeans, perhaps they should invite them back in to take over their own governments.  While the kleptocracies who rule these countries might object, the people do not appear to be on their side.

Daily Mail: Migrant summit in chaos as African countries REFUSE to take back Europe's failed asylum seekers European Union offered more than £1billion in aid to African counterparts In return, Africa would have to take back thousands of illegal migrants But the controversial deal was rejected at a summit in Valletta, Malta Cameron says £200million of UK aid money will be used to tackle crisis It may take more stick than carrot to get them to take back their own people.  That could include cutting off aid and possibly cutting off relations with countries who keep sending their people to Europe.  They will also need to stop being so generous with welfare support for the refugees if they want to deter the flow.
