Geithner behind cutoff of nonunion pensions

Daily Caller: Emails obtained by The Daily Caller show that the U.S. Treasury Department, led by Timothy Geithner, was the driving force behind terminating the pensions of 20,000 salaried retirees at the Delphi auto parts manufacturing company. The move, made in 2009 while the Obama administration implemented its auto bailout plan, appears to have been made solely because those retirees were not members of labor unions. The internal government emails contradict sworn testimony, in federal court and before Congress, given by several Obama administration figures. They also indicate that the administration misled lawmakers and the courts about the sequence of events surrounding the termination of those non-union pensions, and that administration figures violated federal law. Delphi, a General Motors company, is one of the world’s largest automotive parts manufacturers. Twenty thousand of its workers lost nearly their entire pensions when the government bailed out GM. At the same time, D...

Administration dealing in insults instead of logic

Larry Kudlow: Is Tim Geithner the most politically partisan treasury secretary in history? Certainly sounds like it these days. As the government’s chief financial officer, he’s spending a lot of time firing campaign barbs at various Republicans and their policies.   Geithner has blasted Mitt Romney  by name  on several occasions. He frequently attacks Representative Paul Ryan and the GOP budget. And he recently fired a broadside at top-Romney economist Glenn Hubbard, who is presently dean of the Colombia Business School.   Responding to a Hubbard op-ed in the  Wall Street Journal  -- which calculated that the president’s spending plans would require an 11 percent tax increase on people earning less than $200,000 a year -- Geithner said, “That’s a completely made-up, remarkably hackish observation for an economist.”   Hubbard a hack?   Besides running a highly respected Ivy League business school, he was the chairman of Presiden...

Modern human bondage?

Reuters: Analysis: Geithner may want to go; will Obama let him?

Why did Giethner bother to speak yesterday?

David Reilly: That’s it? That’s all Geithner had to offer? It is amazing that this far into the financial crisis, we are still stumbling along, still so reluctant to tackle the problems facing the financial system and the economy. Rather than offer the kind of comprehensive solution he had promised, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner yesterday served up a plan for banks and the financial system that was long on platitudes and short on specifics. And that’s being kind. There were no specifics. There were only vague promises of programs and details to come. Consider Geithner’s description of a rescue plan for the housing market. “We will announce the details of this plan in the next few weeks,” he said. Then there is the question of how the government plans to remove toxic assets from bank balance sheets and how it would value these holdings. Geithner proposed a public-private partnership for this purpose. And the ...
