Supreme Court says government may not take more than a taxpayer owes

Breitbart: It is unconstitutional for government to keep more money from a property seizure sale than it needs to satisfy unpaid property tax bills, the Supreme court unanimously held on Thursday, adding that taxpayers must “render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, but no more.” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the 9-0 opinion for the court. The case involved a 94-year-old grandmother who had moved out of her small condo, after which under Minnesota law the title on the condo was transferred to her local government when she went two years without paying property taxes on the home. “Hennepin County, Minnesota, sold Geraldine Tyler’s home for $40,000 to satisfy a $15,000 tax bill,” Roberts began. “Instead of returning the remaining $25,000, the County kept it for itself. The question presented is whether this constituted a taking of property without just compensation, in violation of the Fifth Amendment.” Roberts explained: The Takings Clause, applicable to the States through the Fourt...

Blue state greed leads to fleeing taxpayers

PJ Media: A new analysis of IRS data shows the financial consequences of gaining or losing population can be either extremely rewarding or devastating to individual states. In 2020, blue states repelled the highest earners while red states attracted them, resulting in massive economic losses and gains. Wirepoints, an Illinois-based research organization, took a look at the latest migration data released by the IRS and drew some conclusions that should leave Democrat-run states in a cold sweat, wondering how they’ll ever be able to maintain their profligacy. In the competition for America’s best and brightest residents, the most populous blue states are becoming perennial losers. In 2020, New York, Illinois, California, Massachusetts, and New Jersey suffered net losses in their population, with high-earners taking their income — and tax base — with them.... ... Not only are fewer people moving into these sputtering states than are moving out, but the newcomers tend to bring less w...

Government greed to drive billionaires from state

Stephen Green: Washington State took a big step this week towards passing a “wealth tax” on the state’s richest residents. The state — home to uberwealthy Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, among others — is holding senate hearings on  SB 5426 , which would portion a 1% tax on “paper wealth” like stocks, bonds, futures, and publicly traded options. I’m reading the text of the bill right now, and about the first 15-20% of it isn’t even actual law. It’s nothing but happy talk, like “Washington has long led the way with innovative and bold ideas that have changed the world.” And: “Washington’s wealthiest residents can and should share more equitably in the responsibility of funding these key community programs alongside their neighbors.” Or: “The legislature intends to disrupt the long-standing systemic inequities in our tax code laid bare by the coronavirus pandemic as we recover, rebuild, and transform Washington’s economy.” Companion bill  HB 1406  got its first public hear...
