We project that increases in tariffs implemented during the period from January 6, 2025, to August 19 will decrease primary deficits (which exclude net outlays for interest) by $3.3 trillion if the higher tariffs persist for the 2025‒2035 period. By reducing the need for federal borrowing, those tariff collections will also reduce federal outlays for interest by an additional $0.7 trillion. As a result, the changes in tariffs will reduce total deficits by $4.0 trillion altogether. The top-line result: Even the Democrat-controlled CBO concedes that tariffs will reduce the deficit over the next decade. Trump has every reason to celebrate. Tariffs shrink the deficit in one of two ways. They either raise revenue directly — as tariffs are a form of tax — or they do so indirectly, by reshoring industry and expanding GDP. ... This sounds like a good deal for the US that will benefit US taxpayers.  What impact, if any on trade with other countries is not clear but it does have potential fo rsubstantially reducing the government deficit.

 Newsmax: Elon Musk, who was tapped by President Donald Trump to run the Department of Government Efficiency, said Thursday his goal of slashing $1 trillion in federal spending could be achieved without impacting services. Musk told Fox News he was confident DOGE could find $1 trillion in savings, slimming current total federal spending levels of about $7 trillion down to $6 trillion. "The government is not efficient, and there is a lot of waste and fraud, so we feel confident that a 15% reduction can be done without affecting any of the critical government services," Musk said. ...  Fox News: U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner announced a new Department of Government Efficiency task force on Thursday to "eliminate waste, fraud and abuse" at his federal agency. DOGE revealed that $1.9 billion in HUD money had been recovered as of Friday, saying the funds were misplaced during the Biden administration and were "earmarked for the administration of financial services, but were no longer needed." DOGE said it worked with Turner to release the funds, and they are now available for use by the U.S. Department of Treasury. Turner said HUD launched its own DOGE Task Force to review how the agency is spending taxpayer money.
