Cost of operation for solar energy to double
Fuel Fix:
The annual cost of operating and maintaining solar energy plants is expected to double in five years, reflecting an increase in future demand while maintaining current installed capacity. The high maintenance costs are in addition to the unreliability of the systems and their vulnerability to extreme weather. Because they are not able to scale to meet demand they require fossil fuel backup plants for more reliable power.
Annual solar plant expenses will grow to $9 billion in 2024, up from $4.5 billion this year, according to the research firm Wood Mackenzie.
