Russia expands its Syrian naval base

NY Times:

Russia Signs Deal Expanding Syrian Military Bases

The agreement would more than double the space for warships in Russia’s only Mediterranean port. News of the deal came as Turkey seemed to soften its opposition to President Bashar-al-Assad.
This appears to be part of the quid pro Quo for bailing out Assad and using its air power to smash resistance in Aleppo.  So far Russian has not done much to defeat ISIL which was its stated purpose for entering the fray.  Russia sees the Mediterranean port as a strategic asset that keeps their fleet from being bottled up in the Black Sea.
