Why are police so reluctant to explain the shooting of an unarmed man?

While the Ferguson shooting was eventually explained and was shown to be justified, the long wait for the explanation allowed the situation to fester and the "hands up, don't shoot" lie to become widespread. We are still feeling the ramifications of that with the misguided protest at NFL games which are causing a disgust with fans.
Police would be wise to expedite their investigation of this shooting and get the explanation out there.
