The goal of a war is to persuade the otherside their cause is hopeless

U.S. Escalates Role in Mideast Wars, With No Endgame

In places like Yemen, Syria and Iraq, the United States is deepening its involvement in wars while diplomacy becomes largely an afterthought.
The problem the US is up against now is that Obama gave the enemy eight years of hope that we would just walk away and let them have their way.  They need to be disabused of that notion.
