With Democrats accusing Bush of lying about WMD why did Pentagon hide casualties?

NY Times:

600 Reported Chemical Arms Exposure, U.S. Acknowledges

Officials failed since 2003 to recognize a stream of reports from Americans who served in Iraq, or to offer them adequate care, the Pentagon said.
These casualty reports look significant enough to have warranted disclosure at the time.  It would have undercut the main argument of the anti war left which was trying to sap morale at home.  It was one of the strangest failures to disclose of the war.

  1. Much of what most people "remember" about the Bush years is badly distorted, and in many cases wrong. In some cases, the unwillingness to fight back traces to Rove. I have no clue why somebody as canny would give such bad advice. At some point, Republicans are going to need to correct the record, but repetition has so ingrained the false memories that doing so only results in derision even when the real facts are provable.
