The quid pro quo between CBS and the Dems
The CBS producer of the 60 minutes hit piece on President Bush put people in the Kerry campaign, specifically Joe Lockhart, in contact with Bill Burkett in order to get him to turn over the bogus documents. This scenerio makes sense in the context presented so far. The prefuntory nature of Lockhart's call suggest he was going through the motions with Burkett in order to help CBS get the "documents" needed for their hit piece. This also gave the Kerry campaign the advantage of a heads up so they could get their "Fortunate Song" ad campaign ready. No doubt Ben Barnes was also telling the Kerry campaign about his role before the CBS cameras. This theory would also explain why CBS was so reluctant to admit they were hoaxed.
Now, we know with the Stoudt interview by ABC, the whole premise of the 60 minute piece was without merit as well as the "Fortunate Son" program by the Dems.
It looks like desperate Dems were trying to throw a Hail Mary to try to stop Bush's strong momentum coming out of his convention. It was another reason why CBS could not wait to check the authenticity of the documents. It also explains Rather's reluctance to come clean. His coverup will tarnish CBS as much as the bogus documents.
