Events in Iraq
Before Iraq was liberated Saddam was terrorizing his people killing more on average than are being blown up by those who would like to restore an anti American government. In the meantime, most Iraqis are freerer than they have ever been.
The liberation of Iraq provided the Iraqis with an opportunity to establish a democratic government and live in freedom. It is still up to the Iraqis to take advantage of that opportunity. So far the results have been mixed. Probably the biggest mistake the US and the Iraqi leadership have made is to stop the Marines when they were on the verge of removing the terrorist from Faluja. The Iraqis sent in to finish the job failed and the town has become a sanctuary for people trying to prevent a democratic election. Iraqi leadership, was willing to take on Sadr's band of thugs and they should be willing to take on Zarqawi's.
It should be noted that the Faluja terrorist were singularly unsucceful at resisting the Marines. The kill ratio was very lopsided in favor of the Marines. The only reason the Marine's hand was stayed was because of a lack of nerve on the part of the Iraqis who wanted to try to resolve the matter without force. These people need to recognize that they cannot negotiate with people who are bent on their destruction and are willing to commit suicide to destroy them. At some point the US may have to tell the Iraqis, either we destroy these guys are we will leave you to fight them by your self.
It is utterly amazing to see a large part of the Democrat Party in the US so easily routed by a weak insurgency movement in Iraq. Sen. Kerry has joined the retreat wing of his party when he occasionally lapses into coherence at all on the subject. What should be recognized is that the insurgents not only are incapable of defeating the US, but could be destroyed by US forces currently in Iraq in a matter of weeks if appropriate steps were taken to destroy the insurgent sanctuaries. It is not fear on the part of US forces that is staying our hand, it is fear on the part of Iraqi officials at the loss of life of their enemies. That is a fear they must overcome, if they expect to take advantage of the opportunity that the US has provided them.
Democrats have had a phobic reaction to insurgencies ever since they screwed up the Vietnam war with a strategy of gradual application of force and aavoiding a loss, instead of a strategy of destroying the enemy and winning. They still do not comprehend what a mess they made of the war, blindly assuming that any insurgency leads to a quagmire. For the Democrats any insurgency signals defeat. If they had been in power after the civil war they would have surrendered to the Ku Klux Klan. It took the US another 100 years to finally destroy the Klan. It will not take that long in Iraq. But, if Democrats want to see a precipitous decline in US power, they will continue to retreat at the first sign of an insurgency.
If you are interested in learning how the Democrats turned the war in Vietnam into a qugmire, see "Strategy for Defeat" by Admiral Sharp, and "Dereliction of Duty" by H.R. McMaster. While there are other books on point those two make the case.
