Wind power accounted for 45 percent of Texas electricity on Thursday

Wind power in the Texas grid set a new record at 9:20 p.m. Thursday evening when it generated 14,023 megawatts of power.

Wind turbines accounted for more than 45 percent of the grid’s overall load at certain points late Thursday as Texas increasingly relies more on renewable power. February has proven a particularly windy month thus far.

The previous peak wind record was set Dec. 20 at 13,883 megawatts, according to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which manages about 90 percent of the state’s grid load. One megawatt is typically enough to power 200 homes during peak demand.

The new record may not last for long as more wind farms are constantly being built in West Texas, the Panhandle and the Texas Gulf Coast.

Wind power will always need to be supplemented with gas turbines or some other form of electrical generation.  Another disadvantage to wind power is it requires a huge grid to distribute it making it more vulnerable to cyber attack.

29 % of companies say they are unlikely to keep insurance after Obamacare

Conn Carroll: A new survey of 368 midsize to large companies found that 29% of them are considering terminating their active employee health care plans when Obamacare is full implemented in 2014. Only 71% of employers surveyed said they did not expect to drop their health coverage, while 20% said they did not know and 9% said they were planning to exit. The latest survey, conducted by Towers Watson, echoes an ealier survey by McKinsey & Co. finding that 30% of private-sector employers were planning to drop their employee health insurance coverage by 2014.
