A weird world view about dealing with violence in Niger and Mali

Washington Post:
Parts of Niger and Mali are already lawless. U.S. strategy might make it worse.

As the United States considers a more aggressive counterterrorism mission in Africa, some caution that a heavy-handed approach could trigger a spiral of violence similar to those the U.S. military has helped to create in the Middle East.
One of the things that created extreme violence in the Missle East was Obama's retreat from Iraq which gave ISIS room to expand its reign of genocide and terror.   ISIS was eventually defeated by partnering with local forces who were trained and supported by the US.  That is what the Green Berets were doing when they were ambushed.

It appears there was a failure of intelligence that made a routine patrol vulnerable.  That is something that can be fixed, but they are dealing with a violent group if Islamic religious bigots who cannot be negotiated with and will not respond to soft power.  The local governments will have to build up their force to space ration to prevent the movement to contact by the insurgents.  They must eventually find and destroy their bases of operation.
