Kelly does not buy into media narrative so they turn on him
NY Times:
I thought Kelly's statement was an outstanding explanation of the facts. Those who did not see it that way appear to be operating on emotion and are missing the empathy and appreciation that was contained in the message. The message was about how special these troops are and the courage they display by doing these missions.
This is really about a misunderstanding of Trump's praise of the courage and devotion of a Green Beret by his widow who was probably influenced in that misunderstanding by a hostile congresswoman who not only opposes Trump but also opposes veteran benefits. What Kellly said in describing the conversation rang true to me, but I also was a combat veteran who was surrounded by Marines who all volunteered. I know exactly what Kelly was talking about and it appears to me that people who have never volunteered for that role are criticizing something they have no concept of.Once Pitched as Calming Force, Kelly Instead Mirrors Boss
For all the talk of the White House chief of staff as a moderating influence, John Kelly has strong feelings about patriotism and immigration that amplify President Trump’s hard-line message.

Had he stopped short of insulting Rep Frederica Wilson, it would have been a fine explanation of events/excuse for Trump's blunder. It is beneath a four-star general to come out speaking as he did about the Representative.
