Only if they want to see their poll numbers drop into the 20's and 30's like Flake and Corker
NY Times:
I am not sure why so many liberals in the media think it is in the interest of Republicans to try to take down Trump. I suspect it is because they want to see the party lose. What would be more likely to happen is that more candidates like Trump would win in the GOP and defeat Democrats.
I get the feeling that liberals in the media still do not understand the dynamic that led to Trump's victory. To be clear, hating Trump and those who voted for them is not the path to victory for Republicans or Democrats. These voters do not trust politicians in general and the media in particular.
As for President Bush, one of the things that troubled Republicans the most about him was that he would not fight back when unfairly attacked. That he would side with the people who spent eight years trying to destroy him is troubling, but it is not going to persuade Trump voters that they were wrong. He appears to have bought into the "white nationalist" claims of the left which has little to nothing to do with why Trump won.
Trump style can be offputting especially to the elites. But his policies are growing the economy and winning the war against ISIS. That is something that is happening regardless of whether it makes headlines on the front page. It is something his supporter care about more than the speeches of people who do not like him.
John McCain is following the path that led him to lose to a candidate a better Republican would have defeated. Corker and Flake took positions that made them unelectable. Other Republicans would be wise to ignore their pattern or they will lose in primaries.4 Republicans Sound an Alarm on Trump. Will Others Follow?
