President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey in Ankara last week. Turkey has about 600 to 800 troops at Bashiqa, near Mosul, a deployment that Iraq says it never approved.

Turkey’s Push to Join Battle for Mosul Inflames Tension With Iraq

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s insistence on a direct role, citing a “historical responsibility” that Iraq rejects, is undermining American goals in the region.
Turkey's main interest is in stopping the Kurds from gain legitimacy and any form of sovereignty.  If he really cared about Iraq and Mosul he could have done more to stop the expansion of ISIL years ago.  He did not make a move until it appeared the Turks were actually being successful in fighting ISIL.  I suspect the did not make that move then because he expected ISIL to wipe out the Kurds for him.

I do not trust much of anything he says.
