A week of fighting in Mogadishu is basically a resumption of civil war, with the Hawiye (a clan name) coalition of clans on one side and the Darod (another clan) coalition on the other. The Hawiye are backed by Eritrea and Islamic radicals, while Darod is allied with Ethiopia and the many nations that helped put the Transitional Government together. The U.S. has openly accused Eritrea of supporting the Islamic Courts militias, and helping to prolong the fighting.

I have commented on the war in Somalia many times. The Ethiopian approach to counterinsurgency warfare should be interesting to follow. But what really surprised me about this story was Google's ad selection. The top one reads Meet Hot Somalian Women. With over 300,000 refugees from Mogadishu alone, there are probably some looking for a place to stay. It is evidently an invitation to join Somali chat rooms. They must be using mobile computing. The next one was for Somali ringtones. Don't ask for who the ringtone chimes.
