Shop lifter thwarted in armed confrontation at Indiana Walmart

 Washington Examiner:

An armed person in Indiana is being heralded as a hero after stopping an armed shoplifter and preventing any injury to a Walmart security guard.

"It is phenomenal that when we needed the community, they were right there with us," said Indianapolis police officer Samone Burris.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department credited two unidentified individuals, one of whom is a licensed gun owner, as “good Samaritans” who prevented what could have been a violent or even lethal situation on Saturday.

"We definitely want to thank both of the good Samaritans and any other standby or person that was here that helped during this incident," he added.

The department said a Walmart security guard, who is also a park ranger, responded to a call for help as a person was accused of shoplifting. The security guard arrived on the scene when the alleged shoplifter pulled a gun on him.

A licensed gun owner then stepped in and pulled out his own firearm and fired at least twice, causing the shoplifter to flee.

Another shopper followed the suspect into the parking lot and, with the help of officers, was able to detain him.

"It definitely does our hearts good that nobody was injured during this altercation. We thank the public that witnessed what was going on and jumped into action with us," Burris said, highlighting the importance of people supporting their local law enforcement.

The charges against the shoplifter will likely be enhanced because of his response to the security guard. The confrontation also shows how people with concealed carry are stepping up to stop crime.
