Where did the media get the idea that Trump would not be critical of China?

A proposed new security law has senators calling for sanctions. But the president is reluctant to jeopardize his ties to President Xi Jinping.
At no time have I seen Trump pull any punches when it comes to criticizing the actions of China where he things they are wrong or they screwed up.  What he has avoided is making the criticism personal about the Chicom leader.  I suspect that is what he will continue to do.

Trump's character is such that he only makes personal criticism of someone who criticizes him.  He actually tried to work with Pelosi when she first took the speaker's gavel until she started pushing the bad faith impeachment efforts.
