This is one reason why I don't trust Rand Paul's judgment on foreign policy

Rand Paul:
America Shouldn't Choose Sides in Iraq's Civil War 
I see nothing wrong with opposing mass murder.  That is a form of choosing sides, but it does not necessarily imply that you are going to send combat troops.   There is a side to this war that wants to destroy the US and we should not be neutral about that.
