Two Russians research firms accused of passing secrets of hypersonic missile program to 'western spies'

Times:
Employees at two Russian rocket research institutes are suspected of committing treason by passing top-secret information on hypersonic technology to western spies.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) seized documents during raids this morning at TsNIIMash, the main research institute of Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, and the United Rocket and Space Corporation.

Dozens of people are being investigated on suspicion of passing secrets on the development of classified hypersonic technologies — able to reach speeds more than five times the speed of sound — to western intelligence agencies, the Kommersant newspaper reported. It was not clear exactly what technology may have been leaked.

President Putin lauded Russia’s new arsenal of nuclear weapons in March, including the Kinzhal aircraft-launched hypersonic missile and the Avangard missile system, which he said had a hypersonic glide vehicle that could strike “like a meteorite, like a fireball”.

A source also predicted that there would an “unprecedented” reckoning as a result of the investigation. “A lot of heads are going to roll and it won’t end with sackings alone.”
...
The accused firms were not in charge of the hypersonic program according to the story, but they may have had information on about it.  It is somewhat surprising that the Russians would even admit to the apparent breach of secrecy.   The US and China are already doing research on the weapons.  The Russians could be concerned that the information might show weaknesses in their program that could be exploited.
