VT murderer sends incoherent rant to NBC between killings

MSNBC:

Sometime after he killed two people in a Virginia university dormitory but before he slaughtered 30 more in a classroom building Monday morning, Cho Seung-Hui mailed NBC News a large package, including photographs and videos, boasting that “when the time came, I did it. I had to.”

Cho, 23, a senior English major at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, killed 32 people in two attacks before taking his own life.

NBC News President Steve Capus said the network received the package in Tuesday afternoon’s mail delivery, but it was not opened until Wednesday morning. The network immediately turned the materials over to FBI agents in New York.

The package included an 1,800-word manifesto-like statement diatribe in which he expresses rage, resentment and a desire to get even. The material is “hard-to-follow ... disturbing, very disturbing,” Capus said in an interview late Wednesday afternoon.

The material does not include any images of the shootings Monday, but it does contain vague references. And it mentions “martyrs like Eric and Dylan” — apparently a reference to Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the teenagers who killed 12 students and a teacher at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., four years ago this coming Friday.

The material is deeply angry, crying out against unspecified wrongs done to him in a diatribe laced with profanity.

“I didn’t have to do this. I could have left. I could have fled. But no, I will no longer run. It’s not for me. For my children, for my brothers and sisters that you f---, I did it for them,” Cho says on one of the videos.

“When the time came, I did it. I had to.”

...

There is more.

It is hard to make sense out of what was said. The package also contained photos of Cho with his gun sometimes pointed at the camera and other times pointed at his head. The package was delayed in getting to NBC because he used the wrong zip code. It appears he was a screw up to the end. The time stamp at the post office indicates it was sent after the first two murders and before he killed the next 30. It has something of the appearance of a Muslim "martyr" video, but seems less coherent. So far there is no suggestion as to who "you" is that he is shouting at.

This is the NY Times take on the package sent to NBC.

The Belmont Club has comments. Captain Ed has a round up of comments on the video. Some is very critical of NBC's decision to broadcast it.

  1. Good one, I really think that leftists don't want law-abiding people to have guns partly because they don't feel that a murderer or rapist or burglar should be shot in the act. They feel that the poor misguided criminal should be arrested and get treatment.

    absurd thought -
    God of the Universe says
    you may not defend yourself

    guns are for criminals
just hope police show in time
