"Fighting back was not an option"?

Dean Barnett asks, "Will those words someday be the epitaph of the Western World?" in discussing the statements of the released captives.

It made me think of the US Marines 1st Division surrounded by the Chinese 8th Army at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. As they fought their way out, the division commander, General O.P. Smith was asked if the Marines were retreating. He responded, "This is not a retreat. We are fighting in a different direction." The surrounded and outnumbered Marines wound up destroying the Chinese 8th Army and Mao never forgot them. It is one reason why he would not let Ho Chi Minh mount a full invasion while the Marines were in along the DMZ.
