Scorpion
Bill Roggio:
I heard a report earler today that cell phone use in Iraq has gone from 300,000 under Saddam to over six million now. This probably accounts for the significant number of calls that are coming in on the tip lines, of which command officals claim actionable intelligence has resulted from 98 percent of the calls. Calls have also increased by a significant amount.
...This operational tempo is a good sign for the new Iraqi army and a bad sign for the enemy. By having a rapid operational tempo, even if the enemy evades on of the cordon and search operations, he does not have time to catch and breath and plan new operations if he is constantly on the run. He is also more likely to make a mistake or be spotted.Five villages are the focus of the operation, which was driven by "Iraqi-generated intelligence". Scorpion is a cordon & search operation designed to uncover weapons caches and flush out and detain suspected insurgents.
The operational tempo in central and northern Iraq has increased. Scorpion is the seventh multi-battalioncounterinsurgency operation launched in the last ten days, and follows Swarmer (Samarra, March 16-23), Raging Bull (Haditha Triad, March 21), Normandy (Ramadi, March 21), Iron Strike (Salman Pak, March 21), Northen Lights (Abu Ghraib, March 23), and an unnamed operation near Balad (March 18-23).
