Democrats in the South struggle to sell their agenda

NY Times:

Across South, Democrats Risk Speaking Boldly and Alienating Rural White Voters

Mike Espy, the Democratic nominee in the Mississippi Senate election Tuesday, has had to choose between satisfying African-Americans and white liberals or driving away conservative-leaning voters.
The conservative message has also become a problem for liberals in selling their control freak policies in the black community as the elections in Florida and Georgia have shown.  In Florida, it was the black moms who recognize school choice gives their kids the best opportunity to escape poverty.  In Georgia, it was black entrepreneurs who supported the Republican approach to growing the economy and getting out of the way of small business.  Liberalism has become a tool for stifling the economy for everyone and locking the poor into dependency.  It should be hard to sell liberalism to everyone.
