What was the nature of Carter Page's meeting in Russia?

NY Times:

Campaign Adviser’s Testimony on Russia Contradicts Denials

Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, told House investigators he met with Russian government officials during a July 2016 trip to Moscow. He has long denied doing so.
It an interview I saw after his congressional testimony, Page said the meetings with Russians on his trip had nothing to do with the Trump campaign.  I got the impression it was about his business interests. If that is the case then this lead omits important details to put the trip in context.  It leads me to believe that his previous denials were about nature of the conversations.
