Murtha's Position Based On False Premise

Representative Murtha's battle fatigue is based on the false premise that U.S. forces have become the primary target for terrorists in Iraq. In fact, they are the target terrorists are least likely to strike. As events this weekend have shown their primary targets are noncombatents, and mostly Shia. The enemy is so fearful of the U.S. forces that usually avoids contact and instead retreats unless he has no alternative. When he does strike against U.S. forces it is in response to offensive measures by U.S. forces which are seeking to destroy him.

Attacks on U.S. forces are about 1/4 of all attacks in Iraq and almost all of them are in response to offensive actions by U.S. forces. As seen in the recent operation in western Anbar province where U.S. forces encountered passive booby traps in the course of clearing several towns. Other attacks on U.S. forces are generally attacks in transient from passive weapons. The enemy is incapable of sustaining an attack on a defended position. This is true of not only U.S. forces but the Iraqi forces that have been arrayed against them.

More on this later.
