The EU is a regulatory state
NY Times:
I do not think it is democratic in any real sense. The European legislature is pretty toothless, and most of the decisions are made by "experts" who decide the power of the vacuum cleaner you can use and the shape of bananas you can buy rather than allow the market to make those decisions. They impose this nonsense on those within its borders and the local parliament is unable to undo the mess. It is another reason their economy is so anemic.
E.U. Is Democratic. It Just Doesn’t Feel That Way.
The bloc was designed to defuse nationalist politics. That is why, for many Europeans, it does not feel like a working democracy.
