Russia imports NORKS for its fight with Ukraine

A new wave of North Korean soldiers has reportedly joined the conflict in Ukraine as part of Russia’s ongoing war effort, marking an escalation in the already complex situation. The deployment comes as U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration intensifies its diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the prolonged war, which has caused devastating loss of life and destruction across the region.
According to the Associated Press, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) revealed that North Korea has sent between 1,000 and 3,000 additional soldiers to the Kursk region of Russia between January and February 2025. This marks a significant increase in North Korea’s involvement in the war, which began in October 2024 when the regime initially deployed 1,500 special forces soldiers and 10,000 regular troops to support Russian forces. The Pentagon has acknowledged these reports but has not confirmed the deployment of these soldiers, stating that it has not seen any clear evidence of their presence on the ground.
North Korean soldiers are reported to have made a distinct impact on the battlefield, adopting extreme and brutal tactics that set them apart from their Russian counterparts. Ukrainian officials have observed that these troops, though suffering significant casualties, engage in ruthless strategies, including the use of grenades when mortally wounded to prevent capture. These tactics have earned them a reputation for being particularly dangerous and unpredictable.
General Oleksandr Syrsky of Ukraine, speaking to The New York Times in January 2025, described the North Korean forces as “highly motivated, well-trained,” and “brave.” He warned that these soldiers should not be underestimated, given their aggressive approach to combat. Despite their fierce reputation, Ukrainian officials have noted that the North Korean forces continue to suffer heavy losses, a testament to the brutal nature of the ongoing conflict.

The Russians needed to hire the North Korean troops because of their own heavy losses in their war in Ukraine. Russia's conventional forces continue to use tactics that induce heavy casualties. The Russian military has been exposed as a force that uses meat-grinder tactics. Its war in Ukraine has exposed the Russian military as an overrated outfit. North Korean troops have not changed the results in Ukraine.
