99 % vote to stay British on Falkland Islands

British Prime Minister David Cameron was very pleased with citizens of the Falkland Islands Tuesday. The day before, they said overwhelmingly that they want to remain a part of the family.

Residents of the island off the coast of Argentina voted almost unanimously to remain a British Overseas Territory, an official said late Monday.

"I am delighted with this result," Cameron said. "It's the clearest possible result there could be, and the fact is that the Falkland Islands maybe thousands of miles away, but they are British through and through and that is how they want to stay."

He said that Argentina should respect the will of the islanders and that the UK "will always be there to defend them."

The question put to voters was: "Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?"

More than 99% of voters said yes, according to Darren Christie, public relations manager for the Falklands Islands government. Just three people voted no. Turnout was 92%.

I don't think they could have gotten that strong a vote or turnout in the UK of England Wales and Scotland.  It was a strong rebuke to Argentine aggression and bullying.  It will give the UK a potent political argument within the UN.
