Disasters show that government works?
That is E.J. Dionne's thesis. Here is his lead:
And, it is oil company engineers in Houston who are working on a solution to the problem and people hired by the oil company who have built the containment towers that will be dropped over the leaks today. It is oil company employees who are drilling the relief well. Meanwhile, government representatives do sound bites about keeping their jackboots on the neck of the oil companies who would be doing what they are doing without government interference.
And, the government is stopping terrorist attacks? Come on. They did not stop the attack in Times Square, they merely cleaned up the mess from a botched attack. The police and the FBI did good work after the attack to catch the guy responsible, but the government did not stop this attack.
In fact, this is just another example of how the Democrats and the Obama administration have put us on the strategic defensive where we react to attacks whether successful or not. It is not a forward leaning strategy where we are out picking up terrorist leaders and finding out what plots they have in progress. That is what the Bush administration did with its enhanced interrogation of terrorist.
While the NY bomber maybe spilling his guts now, this si all after the fact. We may get information about who helped him and we should follow up with a plan to destroy those responsible, but the smarter course is to be on the strategic offensive where we try to capture the leadership and see what they are planning. This is another weakness of the done attacks.
We would be better off and safer if we worked with Pakistan to capture these people and see what they know.
Ever heard the one about the guy who hated government until a deregulated Wall Street crashed, an oil spill devastated the Gulf of Mexico, a coal mine collapsed, and some good police work stopped a terrorist attack?Just exactly what did the government do after the coal mine disaster. The people doing the frantic work to try to save the coal miners were with the company that owned the mine. What exactly has the government done with respect to the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. They have sent a few from the military to try to help contain the oil and stop it from reaching the beaches, but most of that effort was already underway by the oil company that has taken responsibility for the mess.
