Soldier thanks glass company

Pittsburg Tribune-Review:

Iraq is a never-ending fight against the sand.

Raw and gritty, it stings the eyes, burdens the lungs.

But refined, processed and manufactured into glass, sand can become an ally, a see-through shield that stops bullets dead.

More than once, bulletproof glass saved the lives of Spc. Nathaniel Cornman, his Humvee crewmates and others in his unit, the 1st 503rd Infantry, based at Fort Carson, Colo.

For that, Cornman is forever grateful. On Friday, he made a special trip to a Blairsville plant that makes the bulletproof glass. On behalf of his unit, he wanted to thank the company, Dlubak Corp., and its employees.

"Without them knowing it, they have the respect and admiration of anybody that's ever ridden in a vehicle," said Cornman, 21.

...

The Blairsville plant runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In the past year, it has been shipping about 300 to 400 pieces per week, according to Vice President Richard Joyce.

Sometimes, the heavy production schedule wears on the workers, said Frerotte.

"I kept telling them that there's a rainbow at the end of this -- we're saving our boys' lives," he said.
