Don't bet on Beto O'Rourke beating Ted Cruz

Washington Post:
Beto O’Rourke is a Mexico-loving liberal in Texas. Can he really beat Ted Cruz?

Democrats might look at O’Rourke — a small-business owner with hipster credentials, a Gen Xer who speaks fluent Spanish and looks more like a Kennedy than the Kennedys do — and see a candidate of thrilling national potential, marred only by where he happens to live. But then again, maybe it’s where he lives that makes him exciting.
I had a friend in law school whose last name was DeRoss who had a Hispanic mother.  He was from El Paso.  He was a smart guy and got an appointment as a judge, but immediately lost the next election to someone whose last name was Hispanic.  O'Rourke could face a similar problem going up against Cruz.  The fact that he is a liberal Democrat will probably be a much bigger disqualifier for Texas voters.  I would say O'Rourke's chances are remote.
