Elements of Ryan plan already popular with Medicare recipients

NY Times:

Despite Democrats’ Warnings, Private Medicare Plans Find Success

Beneficiaries and both parties have been generally satisfied with private Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare’s drug benefits, which are delivered by private insurers.
I think it is one reason Democrats have had so much trouble getting traction in demonizing Ryan and his plan.  The prescription drug benefit is actually costing about 43 percent of the original projection because of competition by providers.  That is the idea behind the premium support plan that Ryan would offer as an option for seniors who are now under age 55.  I would offer it to any eligible beneficiary at this point in order to make the program more solvent.  BTW, I will be 68 in October.

The Medicare advantage program is also popular with many seniors and it is a program being cut because of Obamacare.  Rather than using a competitive marketplace to reduce prices as was done with these programs, the Obamacare model is a control freak board of 15 people who will use a top down approach that is likely to see many providers drop Medicare patients.  Democrats freak out when this group is called a death panel. but it has characteristics to lead some to see it that way.
