Flip flop message takes hold on Kerry
In the latest polling data only 33 percent say Sen. Kerry says what he believes. This contrast with 51 percent who say Bush says what he believes. While Democrats for more than a year have tried to challege Bush's credibility a majority of Americans still believe him. I think this explains why his poll numbers went up this week despite three week where he was being challenged by witnesses at the 9-11 hearings and books, aned events in Iraq.
While many believe he is sometimes not very articulate, when he speaks directly to the people he is effective. While he is not as glib as Bill Clinton or Tony Blair, he is more believeable. While he had some difficulty responding to some reporter's questions at his latest news conference, the questions had no impact because they were not on matters of substance to the American people. While the press wanted some introspection on whether he had made mistakes or felt some guilt over crimes committed by others he showed focus on dealing with the current problems instead of navel gazing into depression and funk.
The polls also reflect as Americans become more aware of Kerry and his positions he is viewed unfavorable by 29 percent and favorable by 28 percent. This reflected a net decrease for Kerry since February. Another 41 percent have either not heard of him or have no opinion. It is that 41 percent that both sides will be mining in the coming weeks. Nine points of the difference was a drop in favorability.
