Bombs go off in Basra and Riyadh
In Basra three bombs exploded near police stations. In Riyadh a bomb exploded at the former Saudi intelligence offices. Five other bombs had been found and defused before the blast.
These events along with the thwarted chemical bomb attack in Jordon suggest al Qaeda was trying for a spectacular day of killing. It also suggest it is getting harder and harder for al Qaeda to pull off their syncronised bomb ballets.
According to the NY Times:
"Wednesday's bombing and the clashes preceding it represent a qualitative shift in the ongoing war between the security services and Islamic militants believed to be either directly connected to Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda or inspired by the terrorist group, Saudi officials and other analysts said. It was a shift, they said, toward attacks by groups that are less organized, on targets that are less easily protected.
"State television said that the Blazer loaded with explosives tried to force its way through the gates of an older government building that serves as headquarters for both the traffic police and emergency services. The building used to be the Riyadh headquarters for the security services, Saudi officials and foreign diplomats pointed out."
