Trump challenges Pentagon spending

President Donald J. Trump is taking decisive action to address the Pentagon’s long-standing issues of wasteful spending and bureaucratic inefficiencies, aiming to strengthen the Department of Defense (DoD) and realign it with its primary mission of ensuring national security. Alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump is pushing to eliminate unnecessary programs, streamline operations, and refocus the military on its war-fighting capabilities.

Trump has proposed renaming the DoD to the Department of War, emphasizing a return to the decisive military mindset of the past. “When we won World War I, World War II, it was called the Department of War. And to me, that’s really what it is,” Trump said during a press event with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, is central to Trump’s strategy for tackling Pentagon waste. With the DoD’s annual budget approaching $1 trillion, inefficiencies have long plagued the department. A 2015 Defense Business Board study identified $125 billion in administrative waste, which Pentagon officials downplayed to avoid budget cuts.

Trump’s administration is confronting this head-on, with DOGE uncovering $80 million in wasteful spending, including $1.9 million on DEI training and $3.5 million for related HR support. These funds are now being redirected to critical priorities like missile defense and advanced technology.

DEI is seen as race-based spending that is not tied to merit.  I think Trump is right in cutting such spending.  The redirection of this funding makes sense.

Drones appear to be replacing jets for many operations.  The Russia-Ukraine war is an example of that.  Drones are often hard to detect and can be used for intelligence operations as well as for attacking enemy targets.  It would not surprise me to see drones engaging other drones in combat.  They also cost much less than manned fighters.

Apple's huge investment in US including Texas facility

Blaze: Apple announced a $500 billion commitment to infrastructure in the United States over four years, its largest commitment to domestic spending to date. Apple said it will expand teams and facilities in Arizona, California, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, and Washington as part of its new spending. With a new facility in Houston, Texas, Apple will reportedly double its investment in advanced manufacturing along with increasing investments in AI and silicon engineering. The company said in a press release that the Houston facility will produce servers to support Apple Intelligence, the "personal intelligence system that helps users write, express themselves, and get things done." ... The Texas facility will be for advanced technologies.   Texas has become a place that is very supportive of the tech industries.  Austin and Houston have seen much of the tech growth in the state.  Texas universities have been active in the AI field.
