Biden border policy leads to increased crime in San Antonio

The former Biden administration’s reckless border policies have turned San Antonio, Texas, into a battleground for illegal migrant crime, leaving communities shattered and families devastated. Texas GOP Rep. Chip Roy, a fierce advocate for law and order, has sounded the alarm on the chaos unleashed by the open-border agenda that defined the Biden-Harris era.
On Sunday, Jose Fredi Rivera-Mejia, a 44-year-old Honduran national and repeat border crosser, allegedly went on a violent rampage in San Antonio, shooting three people in the head, including the mother of his children, his eldest son, and his girlfriend. One victim, his 22-year-old son, tragically died in the hospital. “Violent crimes like this have no place in San Antonio — much less at the hands of illegal aliens who shouldn’t even be here,” Roy told reporters, pinning the blame squarely on the Biden administration’s failures.
Rivera-Mejia, who also uses the alias Wilfredo Lopez, had been deported three times before this deadly spree. Federal immigration officials confirmed his long history of flouting U.S. law, with deportations in 2010, 2013, and 2015 following arrests for assault and driving under the influence. Yet, he slipped back into the country at an unknown time and place, free to wreak havoc until his capture after fleeing with his other children. He now faces charges of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
“In the last four years, San Antonio — which I am proud to represent — has been ravaged by illegal alien crime due to the open-borders and pro-criminal policies led by the Biden-Harris administration,” Roy declared. His district, encompassing parts of San Antonio, has borne the brunt of a migrant surge that saw over 600,000 illegal immigrants flood the city from early 2021 to mid-2024, according to the San Antonio Migrant Dashboard. December 2022 alone saw 37,000 migrants descend on the city.
The correlation between this influx and rising crime is undeniable. In 2021, San Antonio recorded its deadliest year since the 1990s, a grim milestone fueled by the lawlessness that thrived under Biden’s watch. The city became a magnet for illegal migrants, many released into communities with little oversight, thanks to policies that prioritized open borders over public safety.
Rivera-Mejia’s case is a chilling example of what happens when border security is abandoned. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) records show he was first deported in 2010 after an assault arrest in San Antonio. He returned, only to be deported again in 2013 after a DUI. By 2015, he was caught crossing the border illegally yet again, leading to a third deportation. Each time, the system failed to keep him out, culminating in Sunday’s tragedy.
“Texans should never fall victim to the totally preventable crime of illegal aliens and should lead the way when it comes to law and order,” Roy insisted. He emphasized that a secure southern border could have stopped this nightmare before it began. ICE has now lodged a detainer for Rivera-Mejia, but for one family, it’s too late.
San Antonio has been plagued by high-profile crimes involving illegal migrants. In June, a Marine Corps veteran was left paralyzed and unable to speak after being shot by an illegal migrant while working as a security guard. The suspect, previously arrested multiple times, had been released by the city’s Democratic district attorney, sparking outrage among the veteran’s family and the community.
In March, Texas Department of Public Safety arrested a Cameroonian illegal migrant, one of the state’s “10 most wanted,” for sexual assault in San Antonio. And in July 2024, a Venezuelan illegal migrant engaged in a deadly shootout with local police, a case that prompted Roy to demand answers about the city’s Migrant Resource Center, which processed over half a million migrants during the Biden-era border crisis.

This is more evidence that Joe Biden was one of the worst presidents in US history. Back when I was an attorney for the State Securities Board, I worked closely with the San Antonio DA's office in prosecuting crooks. The illegal immigrant invasion has brought a new level of crime to that city. Trump is right to reimpose border security. Biden was supported by Democrats who evidently thought they were importing future Democrat voters and were willing to accept increased crime to get them.
