Liberals ready to cut and run
Saddam's misjudged George W. Bush. He though he would act like a liberal. A couple of months after Iraq's army was defeated there have been a total of 22 US troops killed in random attacks in Iraq. While all casualties are regrettable, these casualties or of no military significance, i.e. they do not effect the ability of US forces to operate and do the things they need to do in Iraq. They cannot prevent US forces from controlling any inch of Iraqi soil.
Some liberals, who did not want to liberate the Iraqis anyway, see these attacks as a reason to escape a "quagmire" in Iraq. If five years from now, there are 22 US troops killed a day, then it will be time to consider whether the operation has become a "qaugmire." In the meantime a brutal regime that had killed more than 300,000 of its own people and been responsible for the deaths of a million muslims has been destroyed. There was a time when even liberals would rejoice at such news, but they do not now.
Liberals are in favor of using US troops in Liberia where there is no threat to the US. Liberia has not tried to assinate any US president. Liberia has not been shooting at US planes on a daily basis. Liberia has not been facilitating the use of WMD against the US. Liberia has not been having government meetings with members of al Qaeda to discuss a mutual hatred of the US.
However, like Iraq, Liberia has been controlled by a thug. This thug evidently has had some contacts with al Qaeda in the illegal diamond trade. The thug is under indictment for crimes against humanity.
It would be a mistake to send only a few thousand troops to restore order in Liberia. Restoring order will mean that one or both sides that have been fighting will be obstructed from achieving their objective. That side will want to destroy the US mission, and is likely to attack US troops. If troops are going in there should be sufficient numbers with heavy equipment to take on the fighters if necessary.
If US troops go in, they should attempt to gather evidence on the illegal diamond trade involving al Qaeda. Liberals will not like that since it might enhance US national security, but the US should do it anyway. If liberals want to have a meals on wheels mission, it should be used to gather info that will help the US defeat our enemies.
US troops will have to be wary of those who want to create a Mogudishu moment.
