In the south Dems have trouble finding someone to run for senate
In Georgia there are four republicans who have announced for the seat Zell Miller is leaving. So far no Democrats are running. In North Carolina and Florida, seats may become open if Edwards and Graham continue their largely ineffective quest for the Democrats presidential nomination.
The Democrats big problem is national security. They lost seats in 2002 because they played union politics with Homeland Security. That loss, more than any thing else, is what prompted the swith from considering President Bush a light weight, to abject hatred of him by liberal Democrats. They loss because the made the mistake of putting one of their interest groups ahead of national security. It was a stinging defeat.
Democrats in 2002 attempted to claim their patriotism was being challenged when their interest group politics was challenged. They still seem to sound shrill and "gasping for breath" when they are challenged on their national security issues. As someone who fought in Vietnam, John Kerry did not learn much from the experience. If he had been paying attention, he would have noticed that it was liberal Democrats who made that war a quagmire, with their policies of giving the enemy sanctuaries in Laos, Cambodia ane North Vietnam. Their strategic bombing pauses, along with their slow build up were military stupidity.
Even if Kerry were to recognize the problems liberal Democrats caused in Vietnam, the Democratic base seems bent on repeating those mistakes rather than learning from them.
That is why the South is probably going to elect Republicans who will expend effort and treasure to defend liberals in the northeast and west coast from further terrorist attacks and attacks from North Korea.
