ISIS assisting in new annihilation strategy

Washington Post:
‘They will fight to the death’: Iraqi forces start offensive to retake last area of Mosul held by militants

Clouds of smoke rose above the historic center of Mosul as artillery and U.S.-led coalition jets struck militant targets. Helicopters strafed the area as elite Iraqi counterterrorism forces prepared to storm it on foot.
Utterly destroying ISIS operations is now the goal of US strategy, and it looks like ISIS is playing into that strategy.  In fact, their surrender would complicate the strategy.  With their avenues of retreat cut off, there are likely to be few survivors.
