Trump's staying power

NY Times:

As Polls and Fans Speak, Trump Shows Staying Power

Evidence suggests that Donald J. Trump’s dominance in primary polling is no mere “summer fling.”
There are several reasons why he has been able to defy political gravity.   First, he is not beholding to the donor class to fund his campaign.  He has also shown an ability to defy political correctness to the point of making liberals sputter in futile rage over such things as "anchor babies."  The media has lost its power to intimidate Trump as a candidate.  Their early predictions of his demise look embarrassing for them.

Trump is also not beholding to the GOP consultant class which seems to disdain Republican voters as much as liberals do.  The consultants want voters who want to do something about illegal immigration to accept it, and Trump is one of the few candidates who is willing to defy them.

The consultants and the Democrats keep saying that immigration enforcement is a losing issue, but the fact is that voters are really angry about the lawless approach to immigration of the Obama administration.  These voters are also angry with the Republican establishment that has not been willing to challenge Obama on his lawlessness.  The leadership seems willing to fund lawlessness rather than challenge it.

Trump's major weakness is a lack of trust among some conservatives that his instincts are conservative on other issues.  But so far, the other candidates have not been able to make that concern stick.
