How liberals pick the Republican they want to run against

Have you noticed how liberals tend to build up "moderate" Republicans during the primary then destroy them in the general election taking advantage of a dispirited conservative base?   McCain and Romney are two cases in point.  It has the effect of suppressing conservative turnout making it easier for Democrats to survive their bad policies.

Kasich seems to fit that role this cycle.  While Trump is also more liberal on issues like taxes than the rest of the field, he is probably too much of a wild card for the liberals too push, and his stance on immigration is too in your face for them.
