What does Perry have in mind after leaving Governor's Mansion

KXAN:
Time is ticking at the State Capitol. With one week left in the second special session, state lawmakers have yet to wrap up the last of Gov. Rick Perry's wish list - transportation funding.

Competing plans could prevent billions of dollars needed for highway improvements. At the same time, all eyes are on the governor and what is ahead after lawmakers go home.

Many people predict another presidential run, but what if he decides to take another route? When Perry told Texans this month he would not seek re-election, he left a political cliffhanger.

"Any future considerations I will announce in due time, and I will arrive at that decision appropriately,” Perry told supporters at that announcement.

It is a decision some predict might mean exploring some of his political passions outside of an office. Ranching, the energy sector, the Second Amendment, or maybe a political pundit – they are all possibilities.

Still, insiders predict a second stab at the presidency, but would voters forgive him for the first? Several gaffes helped end his campaign early. It might take a lot to bounce back.

"The last one wasn't fatal Matt Mackowiak,” an Austin-based Republican strategist. “It did do some damage, but if he does his due diligence and builds towards 2016, I think right now my sense is he can make a strong showing and give it a real run."

Some Republican strategists say the last run was rushed, mere months to prepare. This time, he has a few years to explore his options - take the risk or stay put.

Rick Perry would make a good President if he wants the job.  Raising a billion dollars for the contest would be no easy task.  What he needs to do is spend more time preparing for the race this go round.  He needs to study the attacks used against him last time and have memorable responses ready.  He needs to have practice sessions before each debate where he hones his responses to questions.
