Kerry's atrocities allegations
There is something about Kerry's allegation that suggest he was an ill informed phony or someone who was out of touch with the real war. I still recall classes for young Marine officers at basic school where we were trained to lead troops in a way to avoid atrocities and were told how to handle them through the command structure if they came to our attention. It was clear that they were absolutely not tolerated.
It was also clear to me that the Marines under my command would have told someone if they saw an atrocity. It was just in their nature to talk about unusual events. In Northern I Corps in 1968, I heard nothing suggesting atrocities. Before becoming executive officer of a rifle company. I worked as assistant commander of Third Marine Division message center. During every 12 hour shift, I read every message to make sure it was legible before it was routed throughout the command. There was never a message suggesting atrocities were occurring much less command knowledge of such. Kerry's charge was just an outrageous slander of troops who were putting their lives on the line in Vietnam. Do the veterans who are supporting him agree with his charges?
