Real facts about service in Vietnam
Jim Dunnigan makes the point made here earlier about avoiding the "sting of battle" while serving in different branches of the service.
I was an executive officer of a Marine Rifle Company operating along the DMZ. I was never very concerned about those who avoided combat service, it was certainly understandable. Frankly, I would not want them in my company. The job was hard enough working with people who were good Marines who had volunteered to be there. When you have a job that difficult you should not have to worry about people you are not sure you can depend on.
I was not even that concerned about those who ran off to Canada. What I could not abide and what still angers me is those who were rooting for the other side. John Kerry certainly gave a pretty good imitation of someone who thought a communist win would be better than our defeating them. For that reason I could never support him nor can I understand why any Vietnam vet who is proud of his service would support him. When you read "The legacy of the killer doves" below you will also have to ask yourself why anyone troubled about what happened in Vietnam would become a liberal Democrat.
