Gov. Abbott activates entire Texas National Guard to help with Harvey recovery effort

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday activated the entire Texas National Guard — some 12,000 personnel — to assist with Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts alongside the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other officials.

“It is imperative that we do everything possible to protect the lives and safety of people across the state of Texas as we continue to face the aftermath of this storm,” Mr. Abbott said.

“The Texas National Guard is working closely with FEMA and federal troops to respond urgently to the growing needs of Texans who have fallen victim to Hurricane Harvey, and the activation of the entire Guard will assist in the efforts already underway,” he said.

FEMA administrator Brock Long said in a statement accompanying the announcement that his agency was there before the storm hit and will be there “as long as needed.”

Abbott had previously activated 3,000 members of the Guard.  The new activation will cover all members, not on active deployment in combat situations.  They have a big job ahead of them.

The US military is also providing logistic support for the operation.

29 % of companies say they are unlikely to keep insurance after Obamacare

Conn Carroll: A new survey of 368 midsize to large companies found that 29% of them are considering terminating their active employee health care plans when Obamacare is full implemented in 2014. Only 71% of employers surveyed said they did not expect to drop their health coverage, while 20% said they did not know and 9% said they were planning to exit. The latest survey, conducted by Towers Watson, echoes an ealier survey by McKinsey & Co. finding that 30% of private-sector employers were planning to drop their employee health insurance coverage by 2014.
