Trump picks senator who supported his immigration stance early on as AG

NY Times:

Trump Picks Sessions to Be U.S. Attorney General

  • President-elect Donald J. Trump has offered Jeff Sessions the post of attorney general, according to officials close to the transition.
  • Mr. Sessions was denied a federal judgeship in 1986 because of racially charged comments.

One of the other candidates mentioned was Ted Cruz.  I tend to think that this move is for the better for Cruz.  He will not be serving at the whim of Trump and can continue to be effective in the Senate.  If later, he might get an appointment to the Supreme Court from Trump, that would be a situation where he could not be fired for political reasons.

Sessions was one of the early politicians to endorse Trump and he did so mainly because if their immigration stand.  The AG post is something of a lightening rod position and I expect he will come under withering attacks from liberals who like to cast opponents as racists, bigots, and homophobes.
